ABOUT

Noted for her “marvelous mezzo” (Oregon Arts Watch, 2025), Claire Robertson-Preis is a mezzo-soprano amusing and delighting audiences in operas, recitals, and concerts in the Pacific Northwest.

Claire brings an “expansive, warm voice” (Oregon Arts Watch, 2024), to bear on artistic projects ranging from immersive operas to choral works. A rostered singer with the Portland Symphonic Choir since 2021, Claire’s “smooth alto intonement” (Oregon ArtsWatch) also shone as the Choir’s Alto Soloist for a world-premiere dance and choral performance of Rachmaninoff’s Vespers. Equally passionate about new and socially relevant choral music, Claire has also been thrilled to join Resonance Ensemble for several moving concerts since 2022. Most recently, Claire was delighted to join them as a guest chorister at the Oregon Bach Festival for Carmina Burana (2025).

As an advocate for innovative opera productions that create immersive experiences, Claire is proud to serve as one of the members of the producing and administrative team of Renegade Opera since 2021. Her commitment to the human voice as a means for connection and service is also central to her work as the Choir Director of Our Saviors Lutheran Church (Lake Oswego). Whether on the podium or at the keyboard as a vocal coach, she reflects curiosity and helps students connect to their unique voice through technique. Recently, Claire has also stepped into music directing, serving as music director for RHS Opening Act Theatre’s Addams Family (2024), Failure: A Love Story (2023), and Mamma Mia! (2022).

In collaboration, Claire brings curiosity and a powerful sense of observation to preparing her performances. In Renegade Opera’s 2025 outdoor production of Bird Songs of Opera, Claire’s portrayal of the American Crow actually convinced the local murder to caw back at her. Similarly, her 2024 role debut of Orlofsky for Renegade Opera’s new adaptation Orlofsky’s Party was “the very vision of a world-weary hedonist.” (Oregon Arts Watch). Other recent onstage appearances in Portland include Norah/Alto Chorus in Renegade Opera's innovative outdoor production of Orfeo in Underland (2021) and Second Lady in Aquilon Music Festival’s production of The Magic Flute (2019).

In addition to her work as a singer, Claire is an avid writer. Look for her essay appearing in the anthology Solastalgia in late 2026. Her performances and writings examine the connections between people, our creativity and the places we shape with our actions. Claire's connection to music, literature, and the environment has been deeply influenced by rural landscapes of her childhood years split between Texas and Montana. When not singing, Claire enjoys hiking, paddleboarding, and trying something new (most recently, stand-up comedy).
